Writing a Book That Makes a Difference
by Philip Gerard
This is a book for advanced writers who aren't worried about their technical proficiency at stringing words and plots together, but who are concerned with writing in such a way that their work makes a profound impact on readers. Uses powerful, well-chosen examples to illustrate very important principles.

Making a Good Writer Great
by Linda Seger
This author's focus is largely on creativity, and she provides enough different ways of looking at the world, and the writing process, to break you out of whatever rut you may be in. The real value of the book, though, is its discussion of the qualities that raise a story from being merely competent to being memorable.

The Art of Fiction
by John Gardner
Simply a classic. Many writers say this is the book to read if you only read one book on writing fiction. Gardner's writing is dense; he packs in a lot of information—much of it more subtle than is covered in other books on writing. Covers "fundamentals" of storytelling, but covers them with uncommon thoroughness.
